The Word for Word compilation is a loose collection of newspaper and online columns about words and their origins. It was published daily for several years in The Courier-Mail in Queensland, then continued online. Queries about word origins or oddities are welcome.
Look for Word d'Jour, a dose of linguistic lunacy and levity posted daily for weeks at a time until exhaustion sets in. It will return, refreshed, in the New Year. Suggested definitions are most welcome and will be credited if published.
The organisers of Queensland's annual media awards are working behind the scenes, refining the system for next year, and have already set the opening dates for entries: June 1, 2016. Take a look at the Clarions website, which lists previous winners.
A Pictorial History of Queensland (Acacia Press, Brisbane). This is just about out of print now although the publisher might have a few copies of the second edition left.
Hold the Front Page - Writing for Newspapers (Qld News)
Definitely out of print now but watch for an updated version, Hold the Front Page - Writing for New Media, coming as an E-book.
Also forthcoming as an E-book is The Anals of Journalism, a collection of media bloopers. Most of these were garnered during my time as Chief-Sub-Editor of The Courier-Mail and I'm thsnkful that few of 'em made it to print. Half the profits from this, if any, will go to the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance Queensland Journalists' Benevolent Fund.
